BUFFET DISCUSSION FORUMS

The Buffet discussion forums have been designed to provide an insight into the world of contemporary fashion with a specific focus on Streetwear- a fast evolving and maturing area of fashion design. Four forums have been developed, each with a different area of the streetwear world in focus.

The forums have been created in order to stimulate growth in the local streetwear industry as well as to enhance the design community's perception of where this progressive genre of fashion is placed today.

The Buffet forums will be held on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 February 2010.  Start times are listed in the Forum outlines below.

FORUM 1: STARTING OUT

Raph Boogie (above) will be sharing his experiences from a long career in the Australian streetwear game.

THE BUSINESS OF STREET FASHION PART 1

When: Saturday 27th February,

Designed for the aspiring entrepreneur this forum explores the current climate for this area of the fashion industry in our region; and the possibilities for those wishing to expand.

 

Industry Background: Discussion by panel

Aust/NZ/Asia Pacific cultural highlights and downfalls when starting brands (ie how we are perceived and how to use or avoid that)

Discussion of the issues faced within the Aust/NZ market, ie limitations in retail and manufacturing.

Analysis of successful domestic brands and what are their attributes. P.A.M, Rittenhouse, Huffer etc

Starting Out: Discussion by panel

Start-up costs and running capital; funding possibilities

How to make preliminary ideas a reality

Marketing: Discussion by panel

The importance of effective branding

Success Story: KEYNOTE SPEAKER

A presentation by KEYNOTE SPEAKER that focuses on their beginnings in the industry. The presentation will include slides and a frank discussion of good and bad choices made as well as suggestions for people starting out in the game.

FORUM 2: THE NEXT LEVEL

The above depicted New Balance Skippy is the second Sneaker colab developed by Sneaker Freaker Magazine. SF founder Woody will discuss his experiences of developing SF into the International success story that it is today.

Designed to cater to people working in fashion business with an eye towards expansion.


The Future:
Discussion by panel

An exploration of where trends appear to be heading for the industry both locally and internationally.


The Next Level:
Discussion by panel

National opportunities for those who have started something (clothing line/store) with some success on a small scale and are looking at opportunities for creating a sustainable brand on a national level either through sales or as an established business that becomes a destination spot.

International: Discussion by panel

How to become a player on the world stage; what other markets look for; offshore production etc; anything associated with taking your business to a global level.

Specifically looking at developing opportunities within the Asia Pacific region.

Diversifying: Discussion by panel

Going beyond fashion- exploring the synergies between fashion and other youth cultures and the opportunities that exist there.

Look at examples of fashion brands that have evolved into non-fashion areas and at non-fashion brands that have successfully launched into street fashion.


Case Study

GUEST SPEAKER discusses his/her accomplishments and explains how they successfully took their brand/business to the next level.

FORUM 3: RETAIL

This forum has been developed for people wishing to enter the contemporary fashion retail market as well as for people already running a business within this area. This forum deals with the different facets of retail business as well as the aesthetic qualities and unique traits of effective retail spaces.

The Retail forum will begin with a keynote presentation by Frank Liew, the founder and owner of successful Auckland boutiques Qubic and Quarters. Frank will discuss The Changing Face of Retail in his presentation by analysing how traditional retail formula has changed and how we integrate old business thinking and tried business models into new marketing ideas.

FORUM 4: THE ART OF CONTEMPORARY FASHION

PART 2- Featuring Trevor Choy

Trevor Choy is the founder of Choy Lawyers. He uses his unique
industry experience to advise clients on practical brand protection
strategies.

To steer Trevor on the topic of streetwear and contemporary fashion,
Buffet has chosen Eddie Zammit (T-world) who intends to use his in-depth knowledge of T-shirt design up against an explosion of copy
cat designers. Eddie is the founder of the world's only publication
dedicated to T-shirt culture with each issue released biannually.


This presentation will focus on the following;

  • Trademarks and brand protection; and
  • Investing in Intellectual Property.


This is a MUST ATTEND forum to those that have ever wanted to
know what to do about those damn copyright infringements and
what to expect from the legal system in regards to T-shirt and fashion design.
In short, it's a XL investment to hear two experts of their chosen
fields battle out the topic.
